Traditionally, hair receivers were a common feature of early 20th-century vanity tables, used to collect loose hair from brushes for reuse in period hairstyles. As fashion and grooming practices evolved, these pieces were later repurposed as vanity trinket jars when hair receivers fell out of everyday use.
By the 1920s, celluloid—an early plastic—was highly prized for its ability to imitate luxurious natural materials such as mother-of-pearl and amber.
